How Leicester city still stand a great chance of winning championship despite loss to QPR

Leicester City fans might be feeling a bit more anxious ahead of their upcoming match against Sunderland. The unexpected defeat against Queens Park

Rangers over the weekend marks their third consecutive loss in the Championship. As a result, the gap

between them and the second and third-placed teams has significantly narrowed, adding more significance to Tuesday night’s fixture at the Stadium of Light.

City would have approached the game against Queens Park Rangers with confidence, especially after their recent

FA Cup quarter-final victory against Premier League opposition. However, despite dominating possession and

creating chances, it was Queens Park Rangers who managed to take the lead before halftime through Ilias Chair.

City’s situation worsened as they sought a route back into the game, with Sinclair

Armstrong extending the visitors’ lead just before the hour mark. However, City managed to quickly respond when Ben

Nelson capitalized on the rebound from a saved Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall free-kick to score his first senior goal.

Despite dominating possession with 74 percent and unleashing 28 shots compared to QPR’s three, City failed to

find an equalizer. Ipswich’s 2-0 victory over Plymouth pushed them past Leeds and narrowed the gap between them and City to three points.

However, despite the defeat, the situation could have been worse for City. Fans arriving at the stadium were closely

monitoring the early kick-off between Leeds and Huddersfield on the TVs in the concourse. Huddersfield managed to hold Leeds to a 1-1 draw, ending City’s

nine-game winning streak, even with a numerical disadvantage in the second half. This outcome directly affected City’s standings.

Without kicking a ball, this outcome lowered the maximum points required

for a top-two finish from 31 to 29 and slightly enhanced their chances in the title race. Ipswich’s inferior goal

difference provides an additional cushion, meaning that securing 30 points instead of 31 could be sufficient for the title.

With one less game remaining to gather the necessary points, City and their

competitors now have 11 games left in the season, with midweek fixtures approaching rapidly.
