why Washington Nationals Signs Atlanta Braves Playoff Hero to Split Contract

According to El Extrabases’ Daniel Álvarez-Montes, the Washington Nationals have reached an agreement with veteran outfielder Eddie Rosario on a split contract, with incentives potentially totaling $4 million based on his MLB playing time. The deal is pending a physical.

Rosario, 32, is coming off a season with the Atlanta Braves where he posted a .255 batting average, 21 home runs, 74 RBI, a .755 OPS, and a 1.1 WAR. He began his MLB career with the Minnesota Twins, showcasing his peak performance from 2017 to 2020 with a .281 batting average and an .810 OPS, averaging 32 home runs, 103 RBI, and a 2.9 WAR per 162 games during that period.

After joining the Cleveland Guardians and then the Braves in 2021, Rosario made an immediate impact, winning the NLCS MVP and helping the Braves secure the World Series title. He excelled in the 2021 postseason with a .383 batting average, three home runs, 11 RBI, and a 1.073 OPS.

Despite a downturn in performance in the following season, Rosario bounced back in 2023. However, the Braves opted to explore other options for left field in 2024.

For the Nationals, non-roster invitee Jesse Winker is projected by FanGraphs to start in left field against right-handed pitchers. Although Winker has impressive career numbers with the Cincinnati Reds, hitting .288 with an .888 OPS in five seasons, his recent performance has declined, batting .214 with a .656 OPS over the past two years. Third-year outfielder Stone Garrett has shown better performance against left-handed pitchers, indicating that whichever veteran wins the battle may platoon with him in left field.
