Hector Ortiz, a dedicated figure in baseball who spent 18 years with the Texas Rangers, passed away on Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona, after battling pancreatic cancer. Ortiz, who played as a catcher for the Kansas City Royals and later the Rangers, transitioned to coaching after his playing career. He served as a hitting coach for the Rangers’ Single-A team and later managed the Arizona Rangers. Promoted to first base coach in 2015, he remained with the Rangers until the end of the 2017 season, also serving as the team’s catching coach. Media members and former players, including Robinson Chirinos and A.J. Pierzynski, paid tribute to Ortiz’s impact on the game and their lives. The Rangers organization, through VP of Communication John Blake, expressed condolences and honored Ortiz before a spring training game with a moment of silence.
