The New York Jets endured a disappointing 2023 NFL season despite

high hopes with the acquisition of future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers. Expected to

propel the team into Super Bowl contention, Rodgers’ season was cut short due to a torn Achilles, just four snaps into the campaign. Consequently,

the Jets finished with a 7-10 record and faced internal turmoil, including speculation about dysfunction and favoritism within the locker room.

Additionally, the players brought in to support Rodgers did not perform as expected, leading to further frustration for the team.

The New York Jets’ disappointing 7-10 season in 2023 can partly be attributed to the underperformance of players signed

to support Aaron Rodgers. Allen Lazard, who had a promising rookie season with the Packers, struggled in 2023 with the

Jets, recording only 23 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown, marking his least productive season since his debut. Similarly, Randall Cobb, a close friend of

Rodgers, had a career-low season, tallying just five receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown. Tim Boyle and Adrian Amos were released midseason and

finished the year with the Houston Texans, while Billy Turner faced challenges securing consistent playing time on the Jets’ struggling offensive line.

Nathaniel Hackett, hired by the Jets to assist in recruiting Rodgers, faced criticism throughout the season. Many

speculate that his retention for the 2024 season is primarily due to Rodgers’ influence rather than his coaching performance.

During an appearance on “Keep Hammering Collective,” Rodgers discussed various topics, including his preferences for players the Jets should retain or acquire. Specifically, he

advocated for the return of kicker Greg Zuerlein and punter Thomas Morstead, emphasizing their importance as assets to the team.

Rodgers highlighted Zuerlein’s impressive track record, noting his past

recognition as a First Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 2017 while with the Los Angeles Rams. In the 2023 season

with the Jets, Zuerlein maintained a high success rate, converting 92.1% of his field goals and 93.8% of his extra point attempts.

 

Similarly, Rodgers praised Morstead’s contributions, pointing out his accolades as a Second Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl

selection in 2012 with the New Orleans Saints. Morstead led the NFL in punts and punt yards during the previous season, showcasing his reliability as a punter.

In addition to advocating for specific players, Rodgers disclosed that general

manager Joe Douglas has kept him informed about roster decisions. This ongoing communication reflects the Jets’

continued regard for Rodgers’ input, despite any past challenges in his relationship with the Packers organization.
