Daniel Farke talks about what last night win at Hillsborough really meant for Leeds United

Leeds manager Daniel Farke believed his team earned “a significant three points” following a 2-0 victory against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday, propelling them back into the top two positions.

Patrick Bamford opened the scoring just before halftime, and Willy Gnonto added a crucial second goal shortly before the hour mark, extending Leeds’ unbeaten league streak to 12 matches this year.

Farke’s team surpassed Ipswich to claim second place, trailing Sky Bet Championship leaders Leicester by two points, with other automatic promotion contenders, such as Southampton, set to play on Saturday.

Farke commented, “It was a thoroughly deserved victory. I believe it was a composed and controlled performance from the team.”

Clearly, Sheffield Wednesday was on a positive streak, playing confidently in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

However, you need to wear down the opponent, diminish their enthusiasm and aggressiveness. Tonight, I’m quite proud of my players. It was a crucial three points for us.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made an exceptional save in the first half to deny Sheffield Wednesday’s Anthony Musaba. After Patrick Bamford converted Junior Firpo’s low cross at the far post, the visitors took charge.

Farke remarked, “Everyone talks about the goal (Bamford) scored at Peterborough in the (FA) Cup – a worldie – this (goal tonight) is, for me, also like a world-class striker goal.

“To have this instinct. Will Junior be there with the cross? To have the movement away from the opponent at the far post, and then you still have to have the concentration to get the ball down.

“It wasn’t that easy to score, and this is a sign of a top-class striker. When it counts, you have to be there and you have to be clinical, so we are all happy that we have Patrick and also have him in his best shape.”

Wednesday had won five of their last six league games in their fight against relegation but missed the opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone for the first time since August.

Manager Danny Rohl, who expressed pride in his team, received a booking in the second half for protesting a foul. He mentioned that his emotions were high due to the extended injury time played by referee Sam Allison at the end of the first half.

Rohl said, “It was a key point. Of course, he showed four minutes, and then it was four minutes more – and everyone can think about if this is a key moment.

“I’m really not happy about this moment. We were hoping to go in at half-time at zero-zero. I will not speak too much about some decisions.”

He added, “Maybe a decision against us, and today we can speak about this. This is football; we have to take it and keep going.”
