Breaking:why Jalen Reeves-Maybin of the Lions is elected president of the NFLPA.

why Jalen Reeves-Maybin of the Lions is elected president of the NFLPA

Detroit Lions linebacker and special teams contributor Jalen Reeves-Maybin has been named the president of the NFL Players Association by its board of player

representatives, taking over from JC Tretter, the former Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns center who served two terms in the position.

In a statement released by the union, Reeves-Maybin expressed his commitment to serving and unifying the membership, stating that he looks

forward to encouraging more players to use their voices in advocating for the union and the game.

Tretter led the players alongside former executive director DeMaurice Smith

during negotiations for the current collective bargaining agreement, which came into effect in 2020. This agreement

brought about significant changes to the league’s schedule, including a 17-game regular season, a reduced preseason, and an expanded playoff format from 12 to 14 teams.

Less than a year after Lloyd Howell succeeded DeMaurice Smith as executive director, Reeves-Maybin assumes the role of NFLPA president. While the

current collective bargaining agreement is set to remain in place until the 2030 season, the union may seek to address issues related to working conditions,

including concerns about the use of artificial turf in several NFL stadiums and its potential impact on player injuries.

In February, Reeves-Maybin secured a two-year contract worth $7.5 million to continue playing for the Detroit Lions following his first Pro Bowl selection and a second-team All-Pro recognition.

Additionally, the union announced the election of four new players to its executive leadership: Oren Burks, Cameron Heyward, Case Keenum, and Thomas Hennessy. They join re-elected

members Thomas Morstead, Calais Campbell, Michael Thomas, Ryan Kelly, Austin Ekeler, and Brandon McManus, each chosen for a new two-year term.
