Unbelievable:Rams to make a shocking decision this week

Rams to make a shocking decision this week

In an article by Daniel Popper of The Athletic this week discussing the effectiveness of NFL teams in free agency over recent offseasons, the Los Angeles

Rams were surprisingly ranked 31st in the league in total Adjusted Value (AV) added through outside free agents since 2020. Only the Green Bay Packers have

added less new talent through free agency, and merely three teams have spent less money than the Rams’ $92 million in the last four offseasons.

Since 2020, the Rams have accumulated a total of 64 AV through free agent acquisitions while spending just $92.8 million. In comparison, the Packers have

only expended $20.9 million and added 38 AV. The Dallas Cowboys ranked 30th with 72 AV added and a spending of $53.7 million.

While baseball utilizes the Wins Above Replacement (WAR) metric, football lacks an equivalent statistic. However, Pro

Football Reference offers a similar metric known as Approximate Value (AV), which aims to quantify a player’s

seasonal value across various positions since 1960. Though not flawless, AV serves as a valuable tool for assessing player performance.

Among the top spenders in free agency since 2020, the Cincinnati Bengals lead the pack in AV added, having spent $286 million. Remarkably, the New York Jets have splurged an astonishing $346

million. Interestingly, Green Bay has achieved the most efficient spending, with each $1 million translating to 1.81

AV added since 2020. In contrast, the Rams have seen less success, with 0.69 AV per million spent, ranking them 20th in the league.

It is important to highlight that the aforementioned calculation excludes trades, which are equally significant but omitted from consideration by The Athletic.

Since 2020, the Rams have acquired free agents such as Allen Robinson, Leonard Floyd, A’Shawn Robinson, and Bobby Wagner. Additionally, they have executed trades for players like Matthew Stafford, Von Miller, and Sony Michel.

Despite having over $25 million in effective cap space, the Rams are expected to be active in free agency this week. However, they may also opt to pursue trade opportunities to allocate their funds differently. Notably, the re-signing of Kevin Dotson, a cost-effective trade acquisition, underscores the team’s strategic approach to player acquisitions.
