Could Sean Dyche’s previous remarks about Everton be coming back to haunt him?

In April 2022, the then Burnley manager motivated his players during a halftime team talk when they were trailing 2-1 at home against Everton, managed by Frank Lampard. Dyche boldly stated that Everton “don’t know how to win a game.” His words proved effective, and Burnley came back to secure a 3-2 victory.

However, while Dyche achieved a temporary victory, Lampard ultimately emerged victorious in the season’s overall outcome. The triumph against Everton turned out to be Lampard’s final win after nearly a decade in charge at Turf Moor. Following a 2-0 loss to bottom club Norwich City in their subsequent fixture, Dyche was sacked on Good Friday. Despite a brief resurgence under interim manager Mike Jackson, Burnley was relegated, while Everton retained their Premier League status.

Easter, being a moveable feast, will find Dyche’s Everton entering Good Friday 2024 without a Premier League victory since before Christmas. Ironically, their last league triumph occurred during Dyche’s return to Turf Moor, where they secured a 2-0 victory. However, since then, their results have been dismal, marking a wretched run for the club.

Everton has now endured an 11-match winless streak, encompassing almost 29% of a Premier League season. They are on the verge of matching their all-time longest winless run in the Premier League, which was set nearly 30 years ago under Mike Walker between August 20 and October 29, 1994.
