Sunderland stands to benefit from this EFL Rule ahead of their next fixtures

Sunderland players will no longer face a two-match suspension for accumulating their 10th yellow card of the season, as the Black Cats have already completed their 37th league game.

Luke O’Nien remains unavailable for Saturday’s home match against QPR after receiving his 10th booking of the campaign during the fixture against

Leicester last week. This suspension also caused him to miss the previous Saturday’s game against Southampton. Similarly, Dan Ballard served a two-

match suspension after receiving his 10th yellow card this season, resulting in his absence from games against Swansea and Norwich.

Trai Hume, who had accumulated nine bookings, and Abdoullah Ba, who had received eight, were both walking the

disciplinary tightrope. However, Hume is no longer at immediate risk of facing a two-match ban after reaching the 37-game cut-off point.

Players who amass 15 yellow cards are subject to penalties according to EFL rules. Anyone reaching this threshold up

to and including the final game of the regular season will serve a three-match suspension prior to any play-off fixtures.

Ballard is the closest to reaching this figure with 11 bookings so far this term, with nine league games remaining in the campaign.

Sunderland is set to host QPR this weekend, followed by matches against Cardiff, Blackburn, and Bristol City after the international break. The team will also compete against Leeds, West Brom,

Millwall, and Watford before their final regular-season match against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, May 4, at the Stadium of Light.
