Championship club under investigation following ‘appalling’ fan behavior at Leeds United fixture

Sheffield Wednesday, a Championship team and rivals of Leeds United from Yorkshire, have issued a statement

confirming an investigation by the Football Association (FA) following an incident during their recent match against Leeds. Allegedly, objects were

thrown towards Leeds’ goalkeeper, Illan Meslier, after Willy Gnonto scored a goal in Leeds’ 2-0 victory at Hillsborough. This incident follows a similar investigation

by the FA regarding objects thrown at an assistant referee during a previous match against Plymouth Argyle. Additionally, Sheffield Wednesday awaits

a verdict regarding allegations of racist abuse towards Coventry City player Kasey Palmer. All incidents occurred at Hillsborough Stadium this season.

The Owls expressed their deep disappointment in a statement released on Tuesday morning, revealing that Sheffield Wednesday is once again the subject of an FA investigation. This investigation stems from incidents during Friday night’s Championship match against Leeds United, where projectiles were thrown onto the pitch from the Kop area of the stadium, violating EFL Ground Regulations and the law. The club faces potential FA sanctions for this and previous incidents witnessed at Hillsborough Stadium this season.

Officials are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the game, and individuals identified as participating in such unacceptable behavior will face severe sanctions from the club and potential police prosecution. Sheffield Wednesday reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards breaches of ground regulations and the law at Hillsborough.

The club emphasized the financial implications of FA investigations and urged the majority of law-abiding supporters to assist in identifying and eliminating such individuals to uphold the club’s reputation.
