Breaking:A New championship League Snooker champion have emerge

A New championship League Snooker champion have emerge.

Mark Selby has returned to the winner’s circle after securing victory in the invitational Championship League Snooker tournament on Thursday.

In an all-Leicester final held at the Morningside Arena, Selby defeated Joe O’Connor 3-1 to clinch the title.

This win marks Selby’s first trophy of the 2023/24 snooker season, which has been marked by inconsistency. The 40-year-old’s last tournament triumph was at the WST Classic, also held in his hometown of Leicester, approximately a year ago.

Despite reaching the latter stages of several other events throughout the season, Selby had been unable to convert these opportunities into victories until now.

Selby secured his place in the Championship League Winners’ Group by winning Group 3 last month. With four wins from six league matches in the round-robin phase, he comfortably advanced to the semi-finals of the competition.

In the semi-finals, Selby comfortably defeated 2015 champion Stuart Bingham with a convincing 3-0 victory.

Despite losing the opening frame to O’Connor in the final, Selby bounced back to win the next three frames, including compiling a neat break of 137 in the process.

In his post-match interview with Phil Yates, Mark Selby expressed satisfaction with his performance over the past two days. He noted that he capitalized on the majority of his chances and felt content with his game overall.

Reflecting on his opponent, Selby praised Joe O’Connor for his impressive performance throughout the tournament, acknowledging the tough

competition in their group. He expressed appreciation for winning the title, but also mentioned that he would have been happy for O’Connor if he had emerged victorious.

Selby emphasized the high standard of play, even in the absence of a live audience, and highlighted the significance of winning in Leicester, both for himself and for other Leicester players.

In addition to the £10,000 champion’s prize and the additional cash bonuses earned for winning frames, Selby has also secured an invitation to next season’s Champion of Champions event.

Despite the absence of spectators, winning a trophy at this juncture of the season will significantly boost his confidence.

Looking ahead, there are numerous key tournaments on the horizon, such as the Tour Championship, for which Selby is currently on track to qualify.

Additionally, the prestigious World Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield looms large on the calendar—a venue where Selby has excelled over the past decade.
