Former Philadelphia Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel Discusses Life After Stroke.  

 

In September last year, Charlie Manuel was unable to communicate verbally or ambulate due to the effects of a stroke.

 

However, after enduring a challenging battle, the renowned former Phillies manager has made remarkable progress and is now resembling his usual self.

 

“I’ve always believed that even a small improvement carries significant value,” Manuel expressed in his first on-camera appearance since the stroke.

That’s Manuel’s current mantra – another saying inspired by Charlie.

After experiencing a stroke that temporarily left him partially paralyzed, even a small step forward holds significant meaning.

“We all had to sit down and explain to him what had occurred, but with the support he received, he began to recover.

It was a very intense and emotional time, and I found myself crying constantly,” shared Missy Manuel, Charlie’s wife.

Missy Manuel has been instrumental in guiding Charlie through months of demanding physical and speech therapy sessions.

The game he adores has been a vital source of engagement for Charlie Manuel.

“I believe it significantly aided my recovery, particularly in terms of my speech. For a period of about two or

three weeks, I felt it was of little importance, even useless to me,” Charlie Manuel expressed.

“His ability to communicate for the first time after the stroke was remarkable; his memory and understanding of baseball

were crystal clear. While he may have been confused about other matters, his knowledge of baseball remained intact,” remarked Missy Manuel.

“Even while in the ICU, Charlie Manuel would watch Phillies games on the iPad. Although he couldn’t express much, it

was evident that he was analyzing and reacting to the game,” added Missy Manuel.

Now that Charlie Manuel has regained mobility, he has returned to his passion of watching baseball, a sport he has been involved with for over six decades.

“I enjoy attending Little League and high school games, observing players and

assessing their skills,” Manuel shared. “It’s something not many people know about, but I find it incredibly rewarding.”

 

But what aspirations does he have at present?

 

“I still have a passion for baseball—it’s something I believe I’ll always be involved in,” stated Charlie Manuel. “As long as I’m alive, my interest in the sport will remain.”

 

Charlie Manuel aims to inspire other stroke survivors to regain their voice by sharing his own journey.

 

Additionally, Charlie Manuel has launched a line of shirts, with $5 from each purchase going towards supporting

the Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Teen Program at the School District of Philadelphia.
