Alex Neil has outlined what he saw as the ‘perfect’ attributes of the Sunderland team he inherited.

Upon his arrival in February 2022, Alex Neil was met with a lukewarm reception as Sunderland found themselves in fourth place in the League One table.

Despite a lone defeat to MK Dons, Neil’s tenure saw an unbeaten run for the rest of the season, with eight wins in the remaining 15 games culminating in a successful play-off final.

Having inherited a squad burdened with underperforming players from the previous regime under Stewart Donald,

Kristjaan Speakman’s astute signings, including Trai Hume, Alex Pritchard, Nathan Broadhead, and Jack Clarke, revitalized the team.

Sunderland bolstered their squad with seasoned players, bringing in four individuals aged over 27, alongside the

emergence of promising young talents who have since made their mark in the Championship.

Neil then led this same group of players to promotion, acknowledging that the squad’s composition was ‘perfect’.

During an interview on the #EFLDebate YouTube channel, Neil remarked, “To foster the development and success of

young players, you need seasoned professionals around them. This was a topic of frequent discussion.”

Reflecting on the current Sunderland squad, Neil noted a potential deficiency in experience. While acknowledging their youth and considerable talent, he

stressed the importance of having a sprinkling of experience. He highlighted the balance he found upon arriving at Sunderland as ideal. The team comprised

promising young talents like Dennis Cirkin, Dan Neil, and Jack Clarke, alongside seasoned players such as Luke O’Nien, Corry Evans, Alex Pritchard, and Ross Stewart.

Neil emphasized the squad’s perfect equilibrium, combining youthful exuberance with the seasoned experience necessary for success. He

attributed their promotion to this harmonious blend, commending the team’s winning mentality and overall quality.

The team that secured victory over Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off final featured Lynden Gooch, Bailey Wright, Danny Batth, Corry Evans, and Alex

Pritchard. Remarkably, Anthony Patterson and Dennis Cirkin were the only young players in the entire lineup.

Since then, Sunderland has parted ways with five members of the starting lineup, while four others are sidelined with

injuries. Anthony Patterson was the sole starter in their recent loss to Southampton.

Under Kristjaan Speakman’s guidance, the Sunderland squad has gradually

transitioned into a youthful ensemble reminiscent of a casual kick-about. While this approach was entertaining to watch

last season, the team’s lack of experience and leadership has become glaringly evident without seasoned veterans to guide them.

It was widely recognized as a significant error to sell Batth, and many now lament the decision, particularly considering the

team’s current state. This sentiment is compounded by the fact that the squad was left with only three center-backs for the latter half of the season.

Alex Neil successfully guided Sunderland to promotion by blending young talent with seasoned experience. The question

arises as to why the club thought it could navigate the challenges of the Championship with only one half of that winning formula.
