Phil Hay explains why Leeds did not offer star player a long term contract

Leeds United couldn’t offer Archie Gray a longer contract earlier due to stringent regulations concerning players under 18, as per Phil Hay. The midfielder, who

primarily played as a right-back this season, celebrated his 18th birthday on March 12. His new contract, signed in January, only became effective after he

reached this milestone. Hay mentioned on The Square Ball podcast that the extension was agreed upon around two months prior, running until 2028. Rules

limit the length of contracts for players aged 17, preventing Leeds from granting Gray a desired long-term deal earlier.

“This contract extension binds him until 2028, which is quite a substantial commitment, considering he’ll just be entering his twenties by then.

Under Daniel Farke’s management, Leeds United has experienced a remarkable turnaround, especially after their relegation from the Premier League last season, when they seemed to be in dire straits.

The previous season in the top-flight was challenging, but their outstanding performances in the Championship indicate a strong possibility of an immediate return to the Premier League.

Numerous players have caught the eye, including young talent Gray, who has been prominently featured under Farke across all competitions.

Despite being only 18 years old, he has already amassed an impressive 40 appearances this season, which is even more remarkable given his age.”

Gray has a promising career ahead of him, and he’s already making a significant impact, with Leeds United

supporters recognizing his talent. Predictably, there appears to be considerable interest in the youngster

from other clubs, indicating that Leeds may face a tough battle to retain him, despite Gray recently committing to a new contract in West Yorkshire.
