News Now:DJ Reader impact on Lions Defense this season

DJ Reader impact on Lions Defense this season

The Detroit Lions have prioritized bolstering their defense early in the 2024 offseason. Under the direction of general

manager Brad Holmes, the Lions have acquired several veteran players to strengthen their defensive lineup. By

adding two cornerbacks, a defensive end, and a defensive tackle, they have added depth to Aaron Glenn’s defensive unit. One of the notable acquisitions is interior

defender DJ Reader, who signed a two-year contract with $9 million guaranteed and a potential value of up to $27.25 million.

Concerns about Reader’s health arose as he entered free agency due to his ongoing recovery from a torn quadriceps

tendon. However, he assured reporters during his press conference on Thursday that he aims to be fully prepared for the start of the 2024 season. Despite his

injury, Reader has been highly productive since entering the NFL in 2016 after his collegiate career at Clemson. Over his eight seasons in the

league, he has accumulated 23 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks, establishing himself as a formidable presence as a nose tackle with a strong ability to stop the run.

New Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams emphasizes the importance of violence and aggressiveness in his players, qualities that align well with DJ Reader’s skill set.

Reader himself expressed appreciation for these traits, stating, “That grit, that

nastiness… Guys are going to fly around, play hard. Your coach is tough-nosed, he’s demanding, he’s not disrespectful.

That’s amazing, you want those type of things.” He added that being in an environment like this motivates players to improve and excel.

While the Lions already have a talented player in Alim McNeill on their defensive line, who is better suited for a 3-technique or possibly a 5-technique

position, the addition of Reader allows for greater flexibility in their defensive scheme. This acquisition provides Detroit

with two formidable options for their defensive interior, addressing concerns about depth and stability after injuries

plagued the team last season. As long as Reader remains healthy, there should be little doubt about the Lions’ strength up front.
