Almost done deal:The Minnesota Vikings to trade up for a quarterback in the NFL draft.

The Minnesota Vikings are planning to trade up for a quarterback in the NFL draft.

The Minnesota Vikings are now in a position to trade up for a quarterback in

the NFL draft, but the looming question is how high they will need to ascend to acquire their preferred player.

The possibility of trading for the No. 1 overall pick evaporated after the Chicago Bears dealt Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, March 16. Recent

transactions and free agent acquisitions by the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots, who hold picks

Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, suggest that both teams are inclined to stay put and select their own quarterbacks.

With potential competition from teams like the New York Giants (No. 6 overall),

Denver Broncos (No. 12 overall), and Las Vegas Raiders (No. 13 overall) for the remaining top-tier quarterbacks after the

top three picks, the Vikings may need to trade up to the No. 4 spot to secure their desired prospect.

According to Matt Miller of ESPN on Saturday, March 16, the Minnesota Vikings, armed with two first-round

picks, are now positioned to make a significant move up the draft board to select a quarterback. The latest speculation around the league suggests

that the Vikings could trade up to the No. 4 spot, where the Arizona Cardinals may be open to trading out with a team in need of a quarterback.

The Vikings’ potential choice at the fourth pick, if they secure it, remains uncertain. While the Chicago Bears are expected to select Caleb Williams from

USC, the next three quarterbacks on most mock draft boards are Jayden Daniels from LSU, Drake Maye from UNC, and J.J. McCarthy from Michigan.

There is growing speculation about Minnesota’s interest in moving into the top five to secure a quarterback like McCarthy or possibly Maye/Daniels if

either falls past New England. Daniels, the current Heisman Trophy holder, appears to be the most likely option

among the three to be chosen after Williams, potentially leaving Maye or McCarthy available after the Patriots pick at No. 3.

The Cardinals could secure a significant return for trading away the fourth pick, especially to a team like the Vikings.

On Friday, Minnesota made a trade with the Houston Texans to acquire the No. 23 overall selection in the upcoming draft,

adding it to their existing No. 11 pick. In exchange, the Vikings sent the Texans two second-round picks, including this year’s No. 42 pick, and the 188th overall

selection. Additionally, Minnesota received a 2024 seventh-round pick from Houston in the deal.

It appears that the Vikings aim to use both of their 2024 first-round picks, and possibly a future first-round pick if

needed, to move up into the top five. However, if the top three teams select quarterbacks, the Cardinals will have a clear path to draft wide receiver Marvin

Harrison Jr., who is seen as a potential game-changing talent and fills a position of need for Arizona.

In such a scenario, the Los Angeles Chargers, holding the fifth pick, would be in a position to benefit greatly from the Vikings or another team desperate for a

quarterback. This is the scenario that ESPN’s Field Yates envisioned on Friday following the news of Minnesota’s trade with Houston.

In a scenario where quarterbacks are being drafted rapidly, I predict that the Vikings will offer their 11th and 23rd

picks, along with a first-round pick from 2025, to the Chargers in exchange for the fifth overall selection,” Yates stated.

“Minnesota recently lost Kirk Cousins to the Falcons in free agency and signed Sam Darnold to a one-year contract earlier this week.”
