Michael Stewart can’t believe what ‘bizarre’ Craig Levein said about Celtic on Saturday

Since Celtic defeated Dundee 7-1 at Parkhead, their victory over St Johnstone on Saturday was arguably the most sweeping victory we have witnessed there.

The season’s opening 6-0 victory over Aberdeen at Paradise came before that Dens Park match outcome.

Celtic had plenty of opportunities to increase the score in both of those games, and they would have more of them this weekend against Craig Levein’s team.

Rodgers’ team produced 23 shots on goal while holding over 73% of the

possession. Of those, six were blocked, seven were off-target, and ten were on target. [Sky Sports]

This gave Levein’s post-match remarks about Celtic an odd appearance, and

Michael Stewart described the St Johnstone manager’s summary of the game as odd.

Stewart stated on the Scottish Football Podcast that, “When he said there weren’t too many chances for Celtic in the first half, he sounds positive and upbeat.”

“There are probably not many people who will concur with that opinion.

They received a grubbing. And, see, they’re not the sole squad. Some teams go to Celtic Park, lose, and then proceed to set plays that they have set up.

“So it’s not as if there’s huge levels of criticism with regards to that. But certainly, his take on Celtic not having too many chances was a bit bizarre.”

To be honest, I just thought Levein’s responses were adorable. Had he spoken his true feelings, he would have just added to the strain his players are already under in the midst of a relegation struggle.

The manager of St Johnstone is aware of how strong Celtic was on Saturday. Stewart points out that Celtic thoroughly outplayed Perth, and if it weren’t for VAR and the woodwork, Celtic might have won by six or seven goals.

This is no joke, Levein assures us. Damage limitation to his own players was his top priority. Regarding Celtic and Brendan Rodgers, they are aware of the reality and will be happy that they gave a performance on Saturday worthy of the Scottish champions.
