Very bad news:EFL management are seriously fighting Leeds promotion as they may …
|Leeds United could face Championship promotion delay after EFL’s Coventry City decision is’revealed’.
Reports indicate that Leeds United’s promotion festivities might be delayed until June, as there are discussions about
potentially rescheduling the Championship play-off final due to Coventry City’s success in the FA Cup. Currently, the play-off final is scheduled
for Sunday, May 26, which is just one day after the FA Cup final on May 25. This potential clash was brought to attention by the YEP following communication
with the EFL last month, although Leeds’ elimination from the FA Cup by Chelsea temporarily diverted attention away from the issue in West Yorkshire.
Both Leicester City and Coventry City advanced to the quarter-finals. Coventry City secured a 3-2 victory over Wolves on
Saturday, earning them a spot in the semi-finals against Manchester United. Mark Robins’ team is also competing for
a top-six finish in the Championship. Consequently, a win against Erik ten Hag’s team would present an unusual situation.
According to The Daily Mail, if Coventry reaches both finals, the play-off will be postponed by seven days to Sunday, June
2. This adjustment is due to Wembley hosting the Champions League final on Saturday, June 1, which adds complexity
to the scheduling. However, the EFL has reserved the stadium for Sunday if necessary. The alternate date will only come into effect if Coventry participates
in the final, so a final decision will be made later. This situation introduces the possibility of uncertainty for teams like Leeds United, who may not secure a top-
two spot, or other play-off contenders, as they may play their semi-finals without knowing the date of a potential final.
The regular Championship season concludes on Saturday, May 4, with
Leeds hosting Southampton, who are also vying for promotion. The play-off semi-finals are scheduled to take place within 10 days after the regular season
ends, potentially causing a wait of two-and-a-half weeks for the other finalists before the Wembley final.
Daniel Farke’s team aims to secure promotion before Southampton’s visit to
Elland Road. Their recent 2-0 victory against Millwall propelled them to the top of the Championship standings.
Despite Leicester City once holding a 17-point lead over Leeds, a remarkable 13-game unbeaten streak, including 12 wins, has closed the gap.
Leeds has eight remaining fixtures in the regular season to secure their return to the Premier League. After the
international break, they will face Watford at Vicarage Road on Good Friday before hosting Hull City on Easter Monday.
