The proposed trade calls for the Vikings to ‘swing big’ for the future quarterback.

The Minnesota Vikings have set themselves up to be bold in the 2024

draft with their recent trade with the Houston Texans. With seven draft picks, including two first-rounders, they are

seen by many as a team poised for a potential trade into the top five. In a recent mock draft by The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, the Vikings acquire former North

Carolina Tar Heel quarterback Drake Maye. In this scenario, Lewis suggests that the Vikings would send three first-round picks to the New England Patriots.

Ascending to such heights and relinquishing three first-round picks

requires boldness,” Lewis stated on March 21. “If you’re going to make a move, why not make it significant? The

Vikings’ link to Maye is widely recognized: Quarterbacks coach Josh McCown mentored him at Myers Park

High School in Charlotte, N.C. However, even before McCown’s involvement, Vikings scouts had been monitoring Maye for several years.

Insider: Vikings ‘Fondly Regard’ Star QB Draft Prospect Amid Trade Rumors

Over the past two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Tar Heels, Maye has

achieved a completion rate of 64.8%, accumulating 7,929 passing yards, 62 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.

He ranks as the second-youngest among the top QB prospects, trailing only Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.

While he may require some time for development, this could sync well with

head coach Kevin O’Connell’s perspective on the necessary path for a young quarterback to thrive,” Lewis noted.

“With a seasoned QB room and an abundance of skillful players, the timing seems ideal for the Vikings to seek out their quarterback of the future.”

McCown is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the Vikings’ future quarterback. He attended Caleb

Williams’ pro day on March 20 and was present during McCarthy’s interview with the team at the scouting combine, as noted by McCarthy.

Maye’s pro day is scheduled for March 28, and the Vikings’ decision on the size

of their delegation could provide insights into their intentions. With McCown’s input, they might opt for a smaller group

to conceal their plans. Additionally, the Vikings have recently signed Sam Darnold to a one-year, $10 million contract in free agency, while Nick

Mullens and second-year player Jaren Hall return after a combined 1-4 record as starters last season.

Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, along with a revitalized focus on the running game led by Aaron Jones, would provide crucial support for

Maye or any rookie quarterback if they were thrust into action sooner than anticipated. Lewis’ suggestion that the Vikings trade up for Maye follows a

similar move by colleague Ben Standig, who picked LSU’s Jayden Daniels for the Washington Commanders at No. 2 in the mock draft.
