Breaking:Jason Demetriou will be sack if he don’t…

Demetriou have been given 3 games to save his job asĀ

Jason Demetriou faces a crucial three-game home stretch against Canterbury, the New Zealand Warriors, and Cronulla with the aim of igniting a turnaround for

his struggling South Sydney team. Failure to do so could result in his dismissal. Following a humiliating 48-6 loss to bitter

rivals the Sydney Roosters, the Rabbitohs find themselves at the bottom of the ladder after three rounds.

In the aftermath of the defeat, Demetriou conceded that it’s “probably the lowest point of my career right now,” yet

remains resolute in his belief that he is the right person for the job. While Souths officials privately support Demetriou and have provided him with the necessary

resources for success, the pressure remains high for him to deliver results in the upcoming matches.

However, the club has an annual expectation of finishing in the top four, a goal that appears unattainable this

season unless the coach orchestrates a rapid turnaround. Taking into account the latter part of last year, Souths have emerged victorious in only four of their

last 16 NRL matches. During this period, only the Wests Tigers, who have finished last in the league standings for the past two seasons, have secured fewer wins.

If they suffer a loss to the Bulldogs on Good Friday, it will mark Souths’ worst start to a season since 2008 when they lost their opening seven matches and finished 14th in a 16-team competition.

The challenges continue for the Rabbitohs afterward, with a bye in round

seven followed by encounters against the Storm in Melbourne and hosting the three-time defending premiers Penrith.

Despite maintaining strong team camaraderie and attending a multicultural breakfast together at

Heffron Park on Saturday, the players have struggled to translate their training efforts into confidence on game day.

Although Demetriou’s contract was extended until the end of 2026 late last year, speculation surrounds his

immediate future, including rumors of his predecessor, Wayne Bennett, potentially returning to replace him.

While there have been no discussions about appointing an interim coach, the club remains confident that Demetriou can orchestrate a turnaround in 2024.

Senior Souths officials and Demetriou declined to comment on Saturday.

In terms of immediate selection decisions, the coach faces a dilemma at halfback, deliberating between retaining Dean Hawkins or reintroducing Lachlan

Ilias after one game in reserve grade, where he performed well in Friday night’s 28-12 victory over the Roosters.

Jye Gray is making significant strides in the NSW Cup, vying for an opportunity to debut in the NRL and potentially serve as

a fullback option. His inclusion could allow Latrell Mitchell to shift to the centres while Campbell Graham recuperates from another injury.

Cameron Murray, the diligent skipper, has been instrumental in preventing Souths from facing even greater setbacks.

Although recruit Jack Wighton experienced knee soreness, he is expected to be fit for the clash against Canterbury, where Stephen Crichton awaits.

Addressing the team’s current predicament, Demetriou stated on Friday night, “I have immense trust in this

group; they’re a cohesive unit that genuinely cares for each other… While we’re not content with our current

situation, we must acknowledge our reality and strive to overcome it.” He added, “I’ve been with this team for an extended period, and I comprehend their

dynamics. I am confident that we are unified and working collaboratively. We simply need to reverse our fortunes, and

I have full faith that I am the individual capable of achieving that. Ultimately, my words hold little weight compared to the importance of results.”
