New Jets backup prepares for ‘tough’ test behind Aaron Rodgers.  

 

 

 

The Jets experienced intense scrutiny over the backup quarterback position last season after Aaron Rodgers sustained an injury in Week 1.

 

In an effort to prevent a recurrence of that situation in 2024, the Jets have taken proactive measures.

 

While they anticipate Rodgers taking every snap this season and the backup quarterback remaining on the sidelines, the team has signed veteran Tyrod Taylor as insurance.

At 34 years old, Taylor provides the Jets with a reliable backup quarterback, addressing a deficiency from last year when Zach Wilson occupied the No. 2 role.

Taylor joins the Jets after serving as Daniel Jones’ backup with the Giants for two seasons.

“It’s a demanding role,” Taylor stated this week. “I believe it requires a unique

individual to grasp the intricacies of the position without receiving regular playing time. Last year presented

different circumstances for various players, but being a backup quarterback is always challenging. There are numerous factors involved. However,

I’ve consistently approached my job with the mindset and work ethic of a starter. This approach helps me stay mentally and physically prepared. I continue to

train daily, striving to perform at a high level whenever called upon on game days.” Taylor emphasized his readiness to step in if necessary.

“I believe I’ve demonstrated throughout my career that I can perform at a high level when given the opportunity,” Taylor remarked.

Last season witnessed a surge in backup quarterbacks taking the field across the NFL, with varying degrees of success.

The Jets cycled through Wilson, Tim Boyle, and Trevor Siemian in their efforts to spark their offense.

Taylor expressed his approval of the Jets’ offseason moves and is optimistic about

the potential of the offense. “I think we have the potential to be explosive,” he noted. “There are numerous playmakers

on the offensive side of the ball, and as a quarterback, it’s exhilarating to see so much potential for big plays.”

Taylor took the field for the Giants in five games last season following Jones’ ACL injury, appearing in a total of 11 games.

 

“While the Giants expressed interest in keeping me,” Taylor remarked, “it didn’t materialize due to business factors. Nonetheless, I have nothing but respect for that organization and wish them all the best.”

 

Fortunately, Taylor won’t need to relocate from his previous accommodations with the Giants. Joining the Jets marks his seventh NFL team.

 

He secured a two-year contract worth $12 million with the Jets. “After carefully considering my options,” Taylor

explained, “I felt that the Jets offered the best opportunity for me to make a positive impact on the team.”
