Vikings’ Kirk Cousins was “blatantly” stolen by the Falcons.

The Minnesota Vikings were already facing challenges in retaining Kirk

Cousins for the 2024 season, but the actions of the Atlanta Falcons exacerbated their difficulties.

During the March 20 episode of the “What The Football” podcast, Mike Florio

from Pro Football Talk accused the Falcons of engaging in “the most blatant case of tampering” he has ever witnessed.

Florio highlighted that tampering is a prevalent issue in the NFL, often occurring discreetly through face-to-face

conversations between agents and team representatives. However, he criticized the Falcons for their overt pursuit of Kirk

Cousins, stating, “There’s a certain element of discretion that gets applied where you don’t just make clear to the world that you tampered with this guy.”

He also alleged that the team utilized their recent connection with Cousins to

persuade him to use his influence in luring former Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney to Atlanta.

“Someone got [Cousins] involved in recruiting Darnell Mooney from the Bears,” Florio added. “So you have

tampering within tampering. There are multiple layers of tampering. [Cousins] spoke about it openly, as if there was no concern. It was incredibly obvious.”

Florio’s remarks referenced an incident during Cousins’ debut press conference with the Falcons on March 13. The quarterback’s initial slip-up involved

mentioning Atlanta tight end Kyle Pitts’ involvement in recruitment weeks before the league’s tampering period

officially began on March 11. Additionally, Cousins inadvertently revealed discussions with team members prior to the designated date.

Cousins stated, “There are great people here, not just within the football team,” highlighting interactions with support

staff like the head athletic trainer and head of public relations. NFL officials responded to Florio’s concerns by initiating a tampering investigation into

the Falcons on March 14, along with other teams like the Eagles, for potential illegal contact with free agents they later signed.

Ultimately, the league may fine or penalize the Falcons in the upcoming draft, but the benefits of acquiring

Cousins could outweigh any sanctions. His presence elevates the Falcons’ competitiveness in the NFC South and playoff contention.

Meanwhile, the Vikings have secured QB Sam Darnold on a one-year deal and are exploring options to trade up from their No. 11 draft position to select a franchise quarterback.
