Philies to sign a top free agent as Multi -Million player is rule out of Opening Day

The Philadelphia Phillies made significant investments this offseason,

committing nearly $300 million to secure the future of their starting rotation by extending Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler to lucrative deals.

However, as the 2024 season approaches, there are concerns surrounding Taijuan Walker, who signed a $72 million

contract with the Phillies in 2022 and is now slated to begin the season on the

injured list due to a shoulder issue. This development has prompted the team to explore the possibility of adding another

top-tier starter to their roster, as reported by MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nightengale wrote, “The Philadelphia Phillies are internally discussing the potential pursuit of free agent starter Jordan Montgomery, although they have

not yet decided whether to reach out to his agent, Scott Boras. Walker’s injury has created a sense of urgency.”

Jordan Montgomery, who played a pivotal role in the Texas Rangers’ World

Series victory last season with an impressive 2.79 ERA in 11 regular-season starts, has garnered significant interest

in free agency. However, reports from Joel Sherman of the New York Post indicate that Montgomery is seeking a contract similar to Nola’s, valued at

around $172 million, which could explain why he remains unsigned as Opening Day approaches.

The Phillies have a reputation for being one of the highest-spending teams in MLB, evident in their past mega-deals for players like Bryce Harper and Trea

Turner. This demonstrates the front office’s willingness to invest in talent to enhance their chances of winning the World Series.

Principal owner John Middleton hinted at the team’s readiness to make a significant acquisition before the trade deadline, suggesting they were holding

onto some financial resources for such an opportunity. However, Walker’s injury may have accelerated their timeline for pursuing such moves.

The team might aim for a short-term deal with Montgomery, especially considering

the lack of interest from other teams. This unexpected opportunity could significantly bolster the Phillies’ starting

rotation, potentially forming an impressive top four alongside Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, and Ranger Suarez.

In the interim, Spencer Turnbull is expected to fill in as the fifth member of the rotation in Walker’s absence. However, neither Turnbull nor Walker

offer the same potential impact as Montgomery. Despite already having a solid pitching staff with Wheeler, Nola, Suarez, and Cristopher Sanchez, the

opportunity to add Montgomery could be too enticing for the Phillies as they set their sights on a World Series championship this season.

“If the Phillies are seeking external assistance to strengthen their pitching roster, Jordan Montgomery stands out as

the premier choice,” Joseph Zucker stated in Bleacher Report. “He represents a significant upgrade compared to the remaining available options.”
