Breaking: NFL Insider Provides a Somber Update on Cowboys Contract Talks with QB Dak Prescott

NFL Insider Provides a Somber Update on the Cowboys’ Contract Talks with Dak Prescott

Negotiations for a long-term extension between the Dallas Cowboys and

quarterback Dak Prescott appear to have hit a standstill, as reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Rapoport shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), “The Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation,

sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year. Owner Jerry Jones said, ‘We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.'”

Additionally, Rapoport noted that there is “no indication a deal is coming.”

Prescott’s contract situation looms large over the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason and has been a significant factor in their struggles to attract top talent in free agency recently.

Unless Prescott’s contract is restructured or he signs an extension to lower his cap hit, he is slated to count $55.45 million against the cap for the 2024 season.

Currently, Prescott’s contract represents a hefty 21.29 percent of the Cowboys’ cap obligations for the upcoming campaign.

Rapoport’s latest report on the negotiations between the Cowboys and Prescott marks a sharp contrast to Prescott’s optimism just a few weeks ago,

as he expressed confidence in getting an extension done during a press conference on March 4.

While the Cowboys could opt to let Prescott play out the final year of his

contract and become an unrestricted free agent next March, this approach may carry too much risk from Prescott’s perspective. Without a new deal, there is

a possibility that he could hold out from offseason activities, potentially extending into training camp this summer.

In anticipation of free agency, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took a pessimistic stance regarding the state of contract negotiations with Prescott in a

conversation with the team’s official website. Jones emphasized that while they have the option to address the

situation, they also have a plan in place that can function without a resolution to Prescott’s contract talks.
