BREAKING:Lions are pushing hard to re- sign Josh Reynolds
|Lions are trying so hard to re-sign Josh Reynolds
Despite his two crucial drops in the NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers and any perceptions about his response to the challenging
game, it has appeared highly probable that Josh Reynolds would depart from the Detroit Lions in free agency.
Ultimately, another team might offer Reynolds a larger role for the upcoming
season, potentially accompanied by a more lucrative multi-year contract. As the third week of free agency begins,
Reynolds has reportedly visited one team in free agency, the Baltimore Ravens. While his market may not have been
expected to be extensive, it was anticipated that there would be more interest from other teams.
Throughout his two-and-a-half seasons with the Lions, Reynolds has proven to be a dependable player. He also appears
to be a good fit for the team culture, evidenced by head coach Dan Campbell affectionately giving him numerous
nicknames and Reynolds playing through what appeared to be a significant injury for a period. In the last regular-season game of the previous
season, efforts were made to help him surpass 600 receiving yards for the season and earn a $250,000 contract incentive.
During the league meetings on Tuesday morning, as reported by Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, Campbell stated that
the Lions have stayed in communication with Reynolds, indicating that the possibility of his return to the team remains open.
“Look, we’re still in contact with J-Rey,” Campbell expressed. “I don’t think it’s a secret what we think about him in terms of the type of player he is; his
unselfishness, willingness to do the dirty work, and his versatility. Look, I love J-Rey, and that doesn’t mean something won’t get done.”
Later on Tuesday, general manager Brad Holmes echoed the possibility of Reynolds being re-signed (as reported by Pride of Detroit).
“He’s one that was part of the original plans,” Holmes stated. “We’re still having dialogue, so we’ll just have to see where
that goes. But he’s really the only one from the original plans who is still out there.”
The decision to re-sign Donovan Peoples-Jones seemed to indicate that the Lions
were moving on from Reynolds. Regarding Peoples-Jones, Campbell expressed confidence that a full
offseason within the system would enable him to have a greater impact with an expanded role.
“He’ll have a better understanding of our system when we head into camp,” Campbell remarked. “So, I think it just provides us with someone we know can
fill the position. He’s also a bigger-bodied guy, so he brings a different dynamic compared to our other options.”
Peoples-Jones saw limited action for the Lions last season, playing just 72 offensive snaps and making five
receptions in eight games after being acquired from the Browns before the trade deadline. If Reynolds doesn’t
return, Peoples-Jones could see an increased role next season. However, if Reynolds does come back, the decision to re-sign Peoples-Jones, considering he’s
viewed as a “rising player” now potentially blocked from further development, might appear somewhat perplexing.
