Rabbitohs are urged to “take accountability” and “ignore the noise.” despite poor form

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are presenting a unified front internally amid a challenging start to the season.

However, according to expert analysis, external factors are undeniably influencing the club’s dynamics.

According to Dave Riccio of The Daily Telegraph, five-eighth Cody Walker and

lock Cam Murray have exhibited exceptional leadership in recent weeks, rallying the team to overcome their

current form slump. Riccio highlighted their efforts in addressing the team and strategizing ways to navigate through adversity.

Riccio noted that the club is striving to mitigate the impact of external pressures, which significantly affected them last year. There is a concerted

effort to shift focus away from the outside noise that previously hampered the club’s performance.

NRL 360 co-host Braith Anasta expressed skepticism, suggesting that Souths should have disregarded external opinions long ago to avoid their current predicament.

Anasta pointed out that the impact of outside influences is evident, as seen by senior leaders and club management resorting to leaking stories to the media.

He emphasized the importance of ignoring external noise, highlighting the need for strong leadership to keep matters internal.

According to Anasta, maintaining confidentiality within the club should have been prioritized much earlier, rather than reacting to the situation only

when under pressure. He emphasized the significance of accountability and making tough decisions, rather than being swayed by external opinions.

Paul Kent added that there seems to be a sense of uncertainty within the club regarding how to navigate through the ongoing turmoil.

Kent suggested that some individuals may lack experience in dealing with such situations, leading them to rely on

guesswork rather than proven strategies. In contrast, seasoned coaches are adept at handling press conferences and deflecting scrutiny effectively.

Souths are gearing up for a crucial match against the Bulldogs on Good Friday, with the game carrying significant importance for them. Despite facing tough opponents

in their previous three matches (Sea Eagles, Roosters, Broncos), all resulting in losses, Souths are optimistic about their upcoming fixtures, especially

considering they will be playing at home for the next three games against lower-ranked teams (Bulldogs, Warriors, Sharks).

Anasta highlighted the team’s belief that they perform better against lower-

ranked opponents and view the upcoming match as an opportunity to turn their fortunes around. However, he

acknowledged the significance of the game, stating that a loss would be detrimental to their campaign.

Coach Jason Demetriou opted to maintain stability in his backline, retaining Latrell Mitchell at fullback and

Dean Hawkins in the halves despite Hawkins delivering a subpar performance against the Roosters. Hawkins replaced Lachlan Ilias, who was

omitted from the squad despite showcasing a strong performance in the NSW Cup the previous week.

The NRL 360 panel speculates that significant changes could be imminent for Souths if they suffer a defeat against

the Bulldogs. Journalist Brent Read suggests that if Souths lose to Canterbury, it could prompt alterations to the lineup.

“There was a whisper going around that Jye Gray would come into the team. I think it was pretty close,” Read

mentioned in response to Anasta’s inquiry about the possibility of Mitchell transitioning to the centres in the event of another loss.

Riccio expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on Jye Gray’s

development if he were to debut amidst the current challenging circumstances for Souths. Despite the high regard the

club has for Gray, Riccio believes that introducing him to the NRL under such pressure could hinder his pathway and understanding of the league’s dynamics.

According to Riccio, the team’s current situation, where they are still seeking their first win and facing adversity, may

not be conducive for Gray’s debut. He suggests that throwing him into the mix against a weaker opponent like the Bulldogs could be too daunting.

However, Kent disagreed with Riccio, arguing that facing Canterbury shouldn’t be considered as “throwing him to the

wolves,” especially considering their lower standing in the league hierarchy. Kent believes that debuting Gray against

a team like Canterbury, which has been among the bottom sides for several years, could be a reasonable opportunity for him to start his NRL journey.

Kent further noted that Souths might have more pressing issues to address

than Gray’s debut, but introducing him into the lineup could potentially provide a positive spark for the team.
