Leeds latest news about Kalvin Phillips, the return of a Celtic player, and the revelation of Ethan Ampadu

Leeds United entered this season as one of the early favorites for promotion and

currently lead the pack, ahead of promotion rivals like Leicester City,

following a crucial 2-0 victory over Millwall in their last game before the current break in the regular league season.

Their manager, a former Norwich City boss, boasts two Championship titles and

remains undefeated at Elland Road this season. Additionally, his team has maintained an unbeaten record since the

start of the year in league fixtures, with only a draw against Huddersfield Town preventing them from winning 13 out of 13 matches in 2024.

With aspirations for a third promotion in as many years from the second tier, Farke and his team face a significant

challenge in the upcoming six weeks as the race for promotion intensifies during the run-in.

After the international break concludes, Leeds United will face Watford and Hull City, making the Easter weekend a

crucial period for teams across the table, a scenario Leeds is familiar with following their 2019 collapse under

Marcelo Bielsa. As these important matches draw nearer, let’s delve into the latest news and significant headlines emerging from Elland Road.

Ampadu’s adaptability has played a pivotal role in Leeds’ achievements. Initially deployed as a holding

midfielder, he seamlessly transitioned to the center of defense due to injuries or squad depth concerns, excelling in both positions.

Despite attracting interest from several clubs, Leeds secured his services, with reports from The Athletic’s Phil Hay

indicating inquiries from mid-table Serie A teams, as well as interest from Bundesliga clubs through his agency’s connections with Didi Hamann.

Additionally, some Premier League clubs made speculative approaches for the 23-year-old, but the Championship held the most substantial interest.

According to sources, Ampadu would have been reluctant to join the club last season due to concerns over previous owners. However, they commended

49ers Enterprises for appointing the right personnel, such as Nick Hammond, to oversee the club’s operations.

Leeds United may pursue Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley in the summer transfer window if they secure

promotion at the end of the season, as reported by Give Me Sport. Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford are also reportedly interested in the 23-year-old.

There has been long-standing interest from Leeds in the midfielder, with Sky Sports News previously reporting that

both Leeds and Southampton were eyeing a deal for the English-born Danish international just before the summer transfer window closed.

Despite Southampton not making an offer for the player, Leeds made a £10 million bid for the 23-year-old in the final hours of the transfer window,

which Celtic rejected. However, it seems a potential deal could resurface in the summer, despite reported interest from various top-flight clubs across Europe.

Leeds United is currently not considering the possibility of bringing back Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, as revealed by Ben Jacobs to Give Me Sport.

While Phillips experienced the most successful period of his career at Elland Road, a potential return may not be on

the cards for the time being. Despite Leeds being in the second tier, they are not actively pursuing a move for the midfielder.

According to Jacobs, who shared the information with Give Me Sport: “Leeds

is not exploring a return for Phillips at this point. Their stance may change depending on which division they will

compete in next season. Even if they were interested in Phillips, he would likely need to accept a reduction in his wage.

“There could be significant interest in Phillips at the right price. We know that

Newcastle has shown interest in the past, but Manchester City has typically been able to dictate terms due to this level of interest.

“Manchester City may view a loan move as a way to offload Phillips’ wages and, more importantly, provide him with

playing time. This could increase his market value and attract interest from multiple clubs, allowing Manchester City to secure their desired price.”
