Heading into the offseason, the Falcons faced significant gaps in key positions crucial to the game, including

quarterback, wide receiver, EDGE, and cornerback. Unsurprisingly, much of the offseason discussion revolved around

the quarterback position, which holds paramount importance in football, particularly considering the Falcons’ recent struggles in that area.

Terry Fontenot, the Falcons’ general manager, addressed this need as effectively as possible given the circumstances by securing Kirk Cousins

in free agency. Additionally, Fontenot bolstered the wide receiver corps by signing Darnell Mooney to a three-year contract.

With the acquisition of Kirk Cousins during the tampering period, the Falcons sent a clear message to the league that they view themselves as contenders. This

move officially opens the team’s competitive window. However, the Falcons still have several other roster needs to address.

While the Falcons have addressed their most pressing needs, they are not alone in this endeavor. To fully capitalize on their competitive window, Atlanta must

assemble the strongest possible roster, which entails significant improvements on the defensive side of the ball.

Currently, Raheem Morris’ defense resembles those that Matt Ryan navigated during his lengthy tenure with

the Falcons, and without additional talent, the outcomes could be similar even with Kirk Cousins at the helm.

Fortunately, the team is aware of its roster deficiencies. At this juncture in the offseason, the most glaring needs are at

cornerback and edge defender, as acknowledged by Morris during the annual owner’s meetings in Orlando.

Despite pursuing marquee pass rushers like Montez Sweat, Haason Reddick, and

Danielle Hunter, the Falcons have yet to secure any signings. The current options on the roster, such as Arnold Ebiketie,

DeAngelo Malone, and Lorenzo Carter, do not inspire confidence and leave the unit ranking among the bottom five in the league.

While the cornerback situation is somewhat improved with A.J. Terrell leading the group, the depth remains a

concern. Mike Hughes, Dee Alford, and Clark Phillips offer decent options, but modern NFL defenses typically require three starting corners, revealing a depth issue for the Falcons.

While a blockbuster move may not be imminent, it’s likely that the Falcons will make notable acquisitions to address these gaps in their roster.
