The Detroit Lions have officially re-signed a veteran quarterback.

The Detroit Lions confirmed on Wednesday evening their re-signing of

veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld. Specific details regarding the contract were not immediately disclosed.

Sudfeld began the 2023 season anticipated to serve as the backup

quarterback until the Lions made significant moves at the position. Firstly, they selected Hendon Hooker in the third

round of the 2023 NFL Draft, followed by the signing of veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to assume the backup role and serve as a mentor.

During training camp, Sudfeld appeared poised to secure the third-string

quarterback position, with Hooker listed on the Non-Football Injury list. However, uncertainty arose regarding his

placement on the 53-man roster or potential assignment to the practice squad. Unfortunately, Sudfeld’s season took an unexpected turn as he suffered

an ACL tear during the preseason finale, leading to his placement on injured reserve and his absence for the entire season.

With Jared Goff returning as the starting quarterback and Hooker expected to assume the backup role, Sudfeld’s return

holds significance as he provides veteran leadership and serves as a valuable sounding board for the team. Goff

previously praised Sudfeld’s contributions in this capacity, emphasizing his supportive demeanor and readiness to step in if needed.

Since entering the league in 2016 as a sixth-round pick for the Washington Commanders, Sudfeld has seen limited

game action, appearing in just six games. During those outings, he completed 25-of-37 passes for 188 yards, tallying one touchdown and one interception.

An important consideration regarding Sudfeld is the implementation of the new emergency quarterback rule, approved during the recent owners meetings. This rule allows teams to elevate an

emergency quarterback from the practice squad an unlimited number of times throughout the season, a role that Sudfeld may potentially fulfill this year.
