The Dallas Cowboys are hoping to secure a contract extension with quarterback Dak Prescott, even though talks for a new

long-term deal are not currently underway, according to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports.

While Prescott’s current contract is set to expire in 2024, there haven’t been any offers from the Cowboys for an immediate extension. Despite this, both

Prescott and the team seem to have a mutual understanding of the situation, as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Although team owner Jerry Jones mentioned at the NFL owners meetings that they are focused on the upcoming

season with no immediate plans for an extension, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports HQ has reported that Dallas does intend to reach a new deal with Prescott and is

not considering letting him test free agency in 2025. However, discussions regarding a new contract are not currently in progress.

This recent development contrasts with Prescott’s earlier confidence in securing a new deal before the 2024 season. He

had expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with the Cowboys, emphasizing the importance of the deal for both the team and the salary cap.

 

The situation has evolved since then, with Jones suggesting that the Cowboys

may need to make adjustments due to financial constraints. Prescott, on the other hand, remains one of the highest-

paid quarterbacks in the league, with over $55 million owed to him in 2024 as part of his current contract extension signed in 2021.

If Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys fail to reach a deal next offseason, speculation arises regarding Prescott’s potential landing spots.

Many are grappling with the decision of the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott to hold off on contract negotiations, leaving

Prescott in a “lame duck” year alongside his head coach and others. With Prescott’s significant cap hit of $55

million, the Cowboys’ decision not to extend him severely limits their ability to enhance the roster, possibly aligning with their strategic plan.

Currently, Prescott appears poised to play for a new contract in 2024, raising the likelihood of him hitting the free

On a lighter note, the New York Giants, if they opt not to draft a quarterback, might relish the opportunity to compete against Dallas with Prescott on their side.
