Joy in Rabbitohs as coach Jason Demetriou have been vindicated

Despite not openly acknowledging it, Jason Demetriou appeared visibly

relieved during his press conference following the Rabbitohs’ inaugural win of the season. With South Sydney

enduring a challenging 0-3 start to the campaign, mounting pressure had been directed towards the team, particularly Demetriou.

The imperative for a victory was paramount for South Sydney to alleviate external scrutiny. While acknowledging that their performance was not flawless,

as noted by captain Cameron Murray, they achieved their primary objective. Murray stated, “We got what we came here to do.”

Upon being questioned about his emotions following the 20-16 triumph

over the Bulldogs, Demetriou responded with a smile and deflected attention away from himself.

“I was genuinely pleased with our defensive efforts on the tryline,” he remarked. “We’re exhibiting signs of nervousness as a team – that’s evident – but the resilience we displayed by consistently showing up…

“I’ve been reiterating it all week, and even mentioned it in last week’s press conference, I have immense faith in these guys.

“I witness their dedication and camaraderie every day, and we simply wanted to translate that onto the field tonight. I believe we accomplished that.

“It’s about reaping the rewards for your hard work. Instead of relying solely on flashy attacks or big hits, like we’ve done in the past, tonight we focused on putting in the effort.

“Limiting the opposition to just 12 points (prior to the Bulldogs’ try from a quick tap in the 79th minute) was quite remarkable given the amount of possession they had.

“We just kept persevering, we kept finding a way, and there’s a lot we can take away from that performance.”

However, Murray acknowledged the sense of relief associated with the win and highlighted the positive atmosphere

within the team leading up to the game, despite the setback of a heavy 48-6 defeat to the Roosters.

“We had a really positive week,” Murray stated. “When we walked in on Monday morning, we were still feeling confident because we knew our capabilities.

“We didn’t burden ourselves with excessive pressure – most of the pressure comes from external sources.

“Tonight wasn’t flawless, but it’s exactly what we set out to achieve. Our primary focus was on putting in the hard work in

areas that require effort and outperforming our opponents. And we accomplished that.

“Building confidence stems from our resilience on the tryline and our unwavering commitment to supporting each other.”

Demetriou delved into the events of the past week and disclosed that there were candid discussions facilitated by himself and the team’s key figures.

“The highlight for me this week has been the level of honesty displayed, not only from the coaching staff but also from our captain and other leaders within the team,” he remarked.

“They’re well aware of the areas we need to improve upon. Tonight was all about putting in maximum effort, and I believe we saw that in abundance.”

Demetriou was queried about whether he felt personally validated following a week of criticism and speculation regarding his coaching abilities, but he dismissed the question.

“I understand that there’s chatter about it, but I don’t spend my days at work fretting over whether I’ll keep my job or not,” he stated.

“I come to work with the understanding that my responsibility is to assist these players in preparing for their matches.

“I dedicate myself to that task every day… I won’t burden the players with my own concerns – that’s something I have to

manage myself. My focus remains on ensuring they understand my unwavering belief in their capabilities.”
