Former Chicago bears QB reveals dreams of playing for Falcons.

The Atlanta Falcons made a significant move at the onset of free agency by signing Kirk Cousins to a lucrative four-

year, $180 million contract, effectively quelling any speculation regarding their quarterback situation for the offseason. However, amidst this signing, it was

revealed by Brooke Pryor of ESPN that Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, who was available for trade, had expressed interest in joining the Falcons.

“Chicago, looking to part ways with their three-year starter as they geared up to select a quarterback with the No. 1 pick in April’s draft, was open to giving Fields

some input regarding his next destination,” Pryor reported. “Prior to the commencement of free agency, the Steelers were among the four teams that

Fields had in mind, alongside the Vikings, Raiders, and Falcons, as disclosed by a source familiar with Fields’ preferences.”

Ultimately, Fields, a native of Kennesaw, Georgia, ended up joining the Pittsburgh Steelers. It comes as no surprise that the

former Bears quarterback harbored a desire to return home and play for the Falcons.

Cousins is recovering from an Achilles injury but is anticipated to fully heal and

be prepared for the upcoming season. The decision to sign him was a strategic move by the Atlanta Falcons, providing a

credible option at the quarterback position to support Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts in achieving success.

While Fields could have potentially delivered respectable performance, drawing from his experience with the Chicago Bears, Cousins boasts superior statistics.

Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot recognized the necessity to enhance the quarterback position, as highlighted by Josh Kendall of The Athletic.

“We were well aware entering this offseason that upgrading the quarterback position was imperative,” Fontenot remarked. “Cousins brings a

level of reliability and productivity. We are confident he will amplify our offensive capabilities, especially given the considerable talent we have in our

young offensive players and our formidable offensive line. There’s a palpable sense of excitement within the team right now.”

Fontenot wasn’t the sole advocate for Cousins; owner Arthur Blank also expressed confidence in him.

“We hold Kirk in high regard, as reflected in the terms of the contract,” Blank

stated. “We recognized the need for significant improvement in the quarterback position, and we believe

Kirk will provide that opportunity. With a distinguished career in the NFL and recent strong performances, we are thrilled to welcome him to our team.”

From a statistical standpoint, the Atlanta Falcons have acquired a quarterback

known for consistently surpassing 4,000 passing yards in most seasons of his career. Prior to his Achilles injury this

season, Cousins had achieved three consecutive seasons with over 4,200 passing yards, including three years with at least 29 touchdown passes.

If Cousins can replicate a season with 4,221 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and

7 interceptions for the Falcons, it would signify a significant improvement for their offense.

Esteemed quarterback Troy Aikman has lauded Cousins for his ability to dissect opposing defenses throughout his career.

Troy Aikman expressed admiration for Cousins’ passing prowess and his adeptness at deciphering defensive schemes.

“I hold him in high regard as a quarterback who can effectively deliver the football and make quick decisions based on the defense,” Aikman

remarked. “I prefer to see a quarterback drop back, plant his foot, and release the ball efficiently. It’s crucial to read the defense and make precise throws. While

there are moments where improvisation is necessary, I prefer it to be a smaller part of the passing game. Overall, I find watching him play enjoyable.”

With Cousins now on board, Aikman’s description aptly encapsulates the qualities he brings to a Falcons team in need of improved quarterback

performance. While Fields could have presented an intriguing option, the Falcons opted to pursue Cousins instead.
