So sad:Tears in Rabbitohs as Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetrius suffered hatred threats

Tears in Rabbitohs as Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetrius suffered hatred threats.

“I sympathize with him. I’ve been in his shoes not too long ago, and he’s a fantastic guy and an excellent coach,” he expressed.

Jack Wighton has staunchly defended South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou against what he perceives as “unwarranted” criticism, disclosing that the scrutiny on the club led him to quit social media.

Wighton delivered a standout performance as the Rabbitohs secured their first victory of the season on Good Friday, scoring twice in his second appearance for his new team against Canterbury.

Acknowledging his disappointment with his debut performance against the Roosters a week earlier, where the Rabbitohs suffered a 48-6 defeat, the Souths center admitted feeling “embarrassed.”

The defeat intensified pressure on under-fire coach Demetriou, as the Rabbitohs endured a winless start to the season following their struggles at the end of the previous season.

However, Wighton contended that much of the criticism directed at Demetriou was unjust.

“I feel for him. I’ve been here only recently, and he’s a great bloke and a great coach,” Wighton remarked.

“What he’s enduring, he doesn’t deserve. So securing the win for ourselves, but particularly for him, is significant.

“There was no lack of effort. Anyone suggesting otherwise, I believe, is mistaken.

“We put in a lot of effort; it just wasn’t cohesive, and those minor lapses led to our defeats.

“We have a talented team that has faced some challenges, so securing those two points is incredibly satisfying.”

For Wighton, the Rabbitohs’ slump has provided a challenging introduction to the spotlight of Sydney.

The former Canberra Dally M winner admitted being taken aback by the attention on the club, which has consistently made headlines over the past month.

“I now understand what it entails to be at a prominent club like Souths,” Wighton reflected.

“At the start of this week, I deleted Instagram from my phone, so I’m not even aware of what’s happening.

“You need to surround yourself with positivity, and that’s not where my focus was this week, so I took that step.

“Canberra has a rich history, but Souths is the NRL’s oldest club and is based in the heart of Sydney.

“With that comes pressure to perform.”

Wighton’s brace provided Souths with a glimpse of their potential on the left edge this season.

While winger Alex Johnston also found open space for the first time this year,

concerns linger over a hamstring injury sustained late in the game.
