Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, who faced his former team as an opponent last season

following his release during the 2023 offseason, could potentially reunite with the Cowboys one year later.

Elliott, who is set to turn 29 in July, was let go by Dallas on March 15, 2023, as part of a move aimed at providing the

team with financial relief. Despite his illustrious career with the Cowboys, the team’s coaching staff opted to move forward with Tony Pollard as their

primary running back, leaving no space for Elliott, even with the possibility of renegotiating his contract for a more budget-friendly option.

Ezekiel Elliott’s career statistics include 8,904 rushing yards, 71 rushing

touchdowns, an average of 4.3 yards per carry, 356 receptions, 2,649 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns.

After encountering limited interest in free agency, Ezekiel Elliott joined the New England Patriots in August.

Throughout the season, he contributed 955 scrimmage yards and 5 touchdowns across 17 games. Despite his return to AT&T Stadium to face the Dallas

Cowboys, where he previously played, Elliott’s performance fell short, managing only 22 scrimmage yards on 8 touches without finding the end zone.

Now, over a year since his departure from the team that drafted him, there’s talk of a potential reunion between

Elliott and the Cowboys. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports mutual interest between the two parties, although a contract deal

is not imminent. While acknowledging that Elliott may not be the same player he once was, the Cowboys appreciate his contributions from last season.

Following Tony Pollard’s departure to the Tennessee Titans, the Cowboys explored various options in free agency for a top running back, but none seemed feasible

within their budget. With the likelihood that their next starter will emerge from the 2024 NFL Draft, Elliott could serve as a valuable complement to the incoming rookie.

Returning to Dallas would also afford Elliott the opportunity to climb the team’s rushing leaderboard. Currently,

he ranks third in Cowboys history for rushing yards (8,262) and rushing touchdowns (68), trailing only Tony Dorsett by five touchdowns.

While Elliott may no longer be a primary starting running back, he has proven

effectiveness within a committee backfield. His performance metrics from last season with New England, including

a 12 percent target share (ranking 15th among running backs) and 1.52 yards per route run (ranking 12th at his position), highlight his versatility.

Moreover, a return to Dallas could see Elliott serving as a mentor to the team’s newly drafted running back, further enhancing his value beyond his on-field contributions.
