Very bad news:Phillies first baseman is badly injured and will be out against Braves

Phillies first baseman is badly injured and will be out against Braves.

Philadelphia Phillies’ star first baseman Bryce Harper won’t be starting in Sunday’s game against the Atlanta

Braves, but there’s no cause for concern among fans. Manager Rob Thomson clarified that Harper was slated for a

maintenance day prior to the series finale against the Braves, even before his

collision with the photographer’s well while pursuing a foul ball during Saturday’s game.

Thomson mentioned on Sunday that Harper’s absence from the starting lineup was initially planned due to the

limited playing time he had during spring training, and the unplanned collision with the camera well during Saturday’s game. The Phillies suffered

defeats in their home opener on Friday against Atlanta, losing 9-3, and again on Saturday, with a score of 12-4.

During the time reporters had access to the clubhouse, Harper was not present. Thomson, about two hours before the

game, indicated that he hadn’t seen Harper and had no updates on his condition. However, Thomson

mentioned that Harper seemed to be feeling relatively good after Saturday’s game, although he did not speak to reporters afterward.

Despite Harper’s absence from the starting lineup, Thomson did not rule out the possibility of using him as a pinch-hitter on Sunday. In a positive

development for the Phillies, Harper is slated to start in the game against Cincinnati on Monday, indicating that he may be feeling better.

Harper, a two-time NL MVP, is currently in his first full season playing as a first baseman after undergoing

reconstructive elbow surgery, which necessitated his move from right field. Since transitioning to first base last

season, Harper has been energetically aggressive in fielding most balls hit his way. However, the collision on Saturday gave the Phillies a scare.

In the first inning, Harper chased down a foul ball hit by Atlanta’s Austin Riley off

Phillies starter Aaron Nola, which led to him tumbling over a short railing and into the photographer’s station in the

dugout. Despite losing his hat in the process, Harper received a standing ovation as he returned to the field and continued playing.

Due to the lopsided score in Atlanta’s 12-4 victory, Harper was removed from the game late. As the Phillies entered Sunday

with an 0-2 record and having allowed 21 runs, Alec Bohm started at first base against Braves left-hander Chris Sale.

Harper, aged 31, has yet to record a hit in six at-bats this season, registering two walks and three strikeouts. Thomson

emphasized the team’s efforts to look after Harper’s well-being, particularly considering the packed schedule ahead with only two days off in the first month

of the season. With a left-handed pitching matchup on Sunday, the Phillies opted to give other players a chance while ensuring Harper’s protection.
