Sad News :Tears in Phillies as Phillies fans have seen their worst nightmares come to reality

Phillies fans have seen their worst nightmares come to reality

The Philadelphia Phillies managed to secure a victory in their opening weekend series against the Atlanta

Braves on Sunday, albeit in a less-than-convincing fashion. While fans may feel a slight sense of relief that the Phillies

avoided a sweep by their division rival, the outcome wasn’t quite what many had hoped for at the start of the season.

Opinions vary regarding the Phillies’ chances of clinching the NL East title this

season, and that’s perfectly fine – everyone is entitled to their own perspective.

What’s more significant is that the team itself believes in their potential. Throughout the winter and into the

spring, players and staff voiced their confidence in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.

“We shouldn’t have any reason not to compete with them and contend for the

division,” catcher J.T. Realmuto emphasized during an interview on the SportsRadio 94 WIP Midday Show

towards the end of spring training. “Our focus should be on getting off to a stronger start and maintaining consistency throughout the season.”

“When we reach the postseason, we showcase our talent, demonstrating that

we’re capable of winning every game,” Realmuto continued. “Realistically, that’s not feasible, but we need to shift our

mindset during the regular season, maintaining the level of consistency we exhibit in the postseason throughout the entire 162games.”

The Philadelphia Phillies didn’t demonstrate consistent performance over the first three games of the season.

However, it’s important to remember that it’s still early days, a sentiment that will likely be echoed for the next month at least.

The Phillies failed to prove themselves on par with the Braves over the weekend. Whether they ultimately win the division or not, fans are eager to see

the front office’s assessment of the current roster validated through on-field success, particularly against the Braves. Otherwise, the quiet offseason, driven by

internal belief in the team, could be viewed as a missed opportunity to narrow the gap between themselves and the reigning NL East champions.

Regrettably, the preseason’s boundless optimism quickly turned to

disappointment on Friday when Zack Wheeler exited the home opener with a 2-0 lead, and the game took a turn for the worse.

While it’s only three games into a six-month-long season, Phillies fans have already seen their concerns validated,

questioning whether their team can truly compete with the Braves, at least in the regular season. Even if not openly expressed, there’s an underlying

apprehension among some fans about the team’s ability to rival Atlanta, lingering just beneath the surface.

While Phillies supporters can take solace in the team’s undeniable success against

Atlanta in the past two postseasons, there’s a desire to face the Braves as equals, rather than perennial underdogs.

Although the Phillies secured a 5-4 victory on Sunday, it was a close call and required a stroke of luck.

Bohm reflected on the game, stating, “That’s baseball, right? You think the

inning’s over, you let your guard down a little bit and you get some luck. Sometimes that’s all you need.”

This win followed a challenging stretch where they were outscored 21-7 and out hit 32-13 over the previous 18 innings. The atmosphere among fans leading up

to Easter Sunday seemed filled with apprehension, fearing the possibility of a sweep in just the third game of the season.

Bohm emphasized the importance of avoiding a sweep, stating, “You never

want to get swept. We came in today, third game of the season, we really wanted this one. Get some luck like that,

kind of get the momentum back and now we’ve got our guys going in the bullpen with a lead and smell a win.”

The Phillies now have until a three-game series starting July 5, their next

encounter with the Braves, to position themselves to prove they can compete with the NL East powerhouse on

Atlanta’s level. Otherwise, Phillies fans may have to accept that the current roster still falls short of matching the Braves’ dominance.
