EfL Chairman has made a bold prediction about Leeds United and premier League promotion

The battle for automatic promotion from the Championship appears to have

narrowed down to a three-team competition as the season enters its final month.

Leeds United, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton have all vied for a top-two finish since August, but Southampton’s chances now seem slim.

Despite a valiant effort, Southampton suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat in the 97th minute against Ipswich yesterday. With both Leeds and Leicester

securing victories, Southampton finds themselves trailing by 12 points in the automatic promotion race.

While Russell Martin’s team still holds a couple of games in hand, including one against Leicester, closing the gap now seems like a daunting task.

The top of the table is tightly contested, with just two points separating Ipswich in first and Leicester in third place. With

challenging fixtures ahead for all three teams, there are sure to be twists and turns in the remaining matches of the season.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony, currently engaged in his own promotion battle in League One, has shared his predictions this morning regarding the teams he believes will secure promotion, live on talkSPORT.

MacAnthony has previously mentioned his predictions for the Championship race, suggesting as far back as two months ago that Leeds could potentially catch up to Leicester.

Leicester held a significant 17-point lead over Leeds at the beginning of the New Year, making the current turnaround in the season quite remarkable.

For the team finishing third and missing out on automatic promotion, it will require considerable mental fortitude to regroup and succeed in the playoffs.

MacAnthony has backed both Leeds and Ipswich to secure promotion

automatically, with Southampton edging out Leicester for a playoff spot.

He stated: “Leeds to win, Ipswich second. And then I’d like Coventry to surprise

everyone in the playoffs, but I don’t think it’s likely, so I’ll go with Southampton.”

Leeds faced the challenge of maintaining their focus in yesterday’s match against Hull City, especially following the dramatic events at Ipswich just moments

earlier. Ipswich’s penchant for scoring last-minute goals this season could easily have unsettled any team in contention for promotion.

Despite this potential distraction, Leeds demonstrated their resilience by remaining focused solely on their own

performance. This mindset proved effective as they secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Hull City last night.

The Easter period was particularly demanding for Leeds, with many players

returning from international duty and immediately facing back-to-back matches against Watford and Hull City.

Considering the absence of some key players in these two matches, Leeds will

be satisfied with their return of four points. This leaves them in second place in the Championship with six games remaining.

The match against Hull City was far from straightforward for Leeds, as Sam Byram’s early goal was canceled out by

Fabio Carvalho just before halftime. However, Leeds persevered, reclaiming the lead in the 88th minute with a

penalty converted by Crysencio Summerville. Dan James then sealed the victory with a remarkable goal in stoppage time.
