In 2021, a momentous trade between the Lions and Rams shook the NFL landscape, with Jared Goff heading to Detroit and Matthew Stafford making his way to Los Angeles.

Taking the helm of a team that hadn’t seen a winning record in three years, Goff faced low expectations upon his

arrival in Detroit. However, reflecting on the trade now, Goff expresses satisfaction with how it unfolded.

“In hindsight, (being traded to Detroit) was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, for my career and my

development as a human,” Goff shared on the Trading Cards podcast, as reported by the Detroit Free Press.

While Goff’s initial season with the Lions was challenging, with only three wins, the team swiftly progressed, signaling a promising future. In 2022, the Lions

achieved a winning season of 9-8 and secured second place in the NFC North, coinciding with Goff’s third Pro Bowl

selection. Building on this momentum, the Lions delivered an even more impressive performance in 2023.

Contrary to initial perceptions, Goff embraced the challenge awaiting him in Detroit, refusing to let negative expectations dictate his journey.

“Being shipped off and being sent to a place to die, essentially, is what a lot of people think it was, and I was never going to allow that to happen,” Goff

asserted. “I’m fortunate enough to be around a lot of good coaches and players in Detroit that support me and help me reach my potential.”

The Lions concluded the 2023 season with a stellar 12-5 record, clinching the top spot in their division and securing

the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. During Wild Card Weekend, Goff and the Lions made history by securing the franchise’s

first playoff victory in 32 years, defeating Goff’s former team, the Los Angeles Rams. Subsequently, Detroit triumphed over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the

Divisional Round before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Throughout the season, Goff showcased his prowess,

amassing 4,575 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and boasting a completion percentage of 67.3.

Goff swiftly emerged as a leader within the Lions’ offense and the city of Detroit. Recognizing the transformative impact of

his environment, Goff acknowledges the empowerment he received from the coaching staff.

“I’ve just gotten older and you get more comfortable in your voice,” Goff remarked. “And I think there was an

element to being empowered that happened in Detroit with Dan and a lot of the coaches and people there that

were like ‘Dude no. You go. This is your thing, you go figure it out,’ whereas as a young player, that wasn’t always the case.”

As Goff continues to evolve within the Lions’ system and the team gears up for the upcoming season, the potential for further success looms on the horizon.
