Unbelievable:Raheem Morris reveals plans of tackling Falcons defensive problems
|During the Falcons’ search for a new head coach, Atlanta’s selling points to potential candidates were evident.
Terry Fontenot had amassed numerous offensive talents, and Arthur Blank was ready to invest in any player or asset
needed for success. Moreover, the NFC South was arguably one of the weakest divisions in the NFL, and the team
possessed the resources — both in draft picks and salary cap space — to enhance the roster.
However, there were drawbacks. The Falcons lacked a quarterback, and their defense required further reinforcement. When Blank and Fontenot settled on
Raheem Morris, it was clear that quarterback acquisition would be the primary focus of the offseason.
Ultimately, the Falcons secured Kirk Cousins and Darnell Mooney through
free agency, addressing the team’s two most significant needs. Nonetheless, the
defense still has notable deficiencies, particularly at cornerback and edge rusher positions.
Despite these shortcomings, the defense boasts considerable talent. Along the defensive line, Grady Jarrett and David
Onyemata form a formidable duo, while the secondary may house the team’s most impressive talent.
The Falcons’ secondary will be anchored by two All-Pro players, A.J. Terrell and
Jessie Bates, a prospect that Raheem Morris is particularly thrilled about coaching.
Terrell and Morris have a history together. They both were part of the Atlanta Falcons during the 2020 season, Terrell’s rookie year and Morris’ final
season with the team. Morris assumed the role of interim head coach after Dan Quinn was fired five games into that season.
While there’s hope that the Falcons will acquire another starting-caliber
cornerback, Morris and Jimmy Lake will heavily rely on A.J. Terrell and Jessie Bates III if that doesn’t happen.
