Sad News:am not playing again, Anthony Volpe have terminate his contract

With their star pitcher Gerrit Cole sidelined until at least June due to injury, could the New York Yankees, currently leading their division, be looking to bolster their starting rotation? Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report has identified the Yankees as one of six teams that could

serve as “ideal landing spots” for Miami Marlins pitcher Jesús Luzardo. The 26-year-old southpaw, who started on Opening Day for Miami, has had a rough

start to the season, posting a concerning 7.65 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in his first four outings, spanning 20 innings with 21 strikeouts.

“Luzardo’s performance in the 2024 season has been less than stellar,” noted

Kelly in his April 17 Bleacher Report article. “However, over the span of the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, the 26-year-

old boasted a 3.48 ERA and 3.40 FIP across 279 innings. While he may not be the ideal choice for a team seeking a

frontline starter for playoff series openers, he could prove to be a valuable addition for a team with aspirations of a

deep postseason run, slotting in as an effective third or fourth option in the rotation.”

In the context of the New York Yankees, Luzardo could fill a role in the middle or

backend of their potential playoff rotation, especially if Gerrit Cole makes a successful return from his elbow injury

this season. With Luzardo’s impressive track record, including a 10-10 record, a 3.58 ERA, and 208 strikeouts in 32 starts

last season, he could complement pitchers like Nestor Cortes, Carlos Rodon, and Marcus Stroman in the Yankees’ five-

man rotation, with promising young arms Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil providing additional depth options.

Currently leading the American League East with a 13-6 record, the Yankees

boast the most wins in MLB and rank fifth in team ERA with a 3.11 mark. In addition to the Yankees, Bleacher Report

also identified the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians, and San Diego

Padres as potential trade destinations for Luzardo. With two years of arbitration eligibility remaining and free agency not

looming until after the 2026 season, Luzardo is an attractive trade target for teams in need of pitching depth.

As Kelly points out, virtually every team seeking pitching upgrades will likely be interested in Luzardo, and the eventual

trade may come down to which team is willing to offer the most in return to acquire his services.

Before the onset of the current season, Jesús Luzardo held the 28th spot in The Athletic’s 2024 Aces Project, a ranking of

the top 50 starting pitchers in baseball compiled by MLB executives, analysts, and scouts. He shared this ranking with

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Bobby Miller and Max Scherzer from the Texas Rangers. Luzardo, represented by agent

Scott Boras, is earning $5.5 million this season with the Marlins. Tim Britton, also of The Athletic, projected in a March

article that Luzardo could secure a contract extension worth $90 million over six years.

With a disappointing 4-15 record so far this season, the Marlins are likely to be sellers at the trade deadline on July 30.

Despite Luzardo’s potential departure, the Marlins possess a cadre of talented starting pitchers, including prospects

such as Max Meyer, Sixto Sanchez, Edward Cabrera, Trevor Rogers, Ryan Weathers, and A.J. Puk. However, their

2022 Cy Young Award winner, Sandy Alcántara, is sidelined for the entirety of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery.

In a recent mock trade proposal by Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer, Luzardo was envisioned as part of a deal

sending him to the Yankees in exchange for top prospects Spencer Jones, Roderick Arias, and Everson Pereira. The Yankees

have been hesitant to part with Jones, a 22-year-old outfielder known for his power and speed, currently playing in

Double-A. MLB Pipeline ranked Jones as the 77th overall prospect for the 2024 season.

During the previous offseason, Jon Heyman revealed that the Yankees declined to include Spencer Jones in

trade talks for elite starting pitchers such as Corbin Burnes and Dylan Cease. Bryan Hoch, MLB.com’s Yankees reporter, has

recently raised the idea of Jones bypassing Triple-A and making a direct leap from Double-A to the major leagues.
