The Melbourne Storm reclaimed the top spot on the table with their fifth thrilling victory of the season, but their triumph could have been in jeopardy after a lapse in judgment from Cameron Munster forced them to endure 10 minutes with only 12 men.

Despite the 18-12 win over the Roosters lacking in aesthetic appeal, it showcased one of the Storm’s most resilient

defensive performances, with the home team failing to produce a single line break on Thursday night.

This defensive prowess was particularly evident during a period of numerical disadvantage, prompted by Munster’s

sin-binning for a professional foul on James Tedesco as he returned the ball from a 20m restart.

The Storm maintained that halfback Jahrome Hughes was pulled down after executing a kick, leading to a disrupted defensive line and necessitating

Munster’s intervention to tackle his Kangaroos teammate and prevent a try at the opposite end.

“I don’t think he’s even aware that he’s been sin-binned yet, but I’m sure he’ll realize at some point,” remarked Craig

Bellamy, expressing pride in his team’s ability to keep the Roosters from scoring during those 10 minutes.

“That was disappointing. The referee made a decision, but we chose to argue

about it. He’s not going to change his mind, so let’s just get back the 10.

“It made things difficult for the rest of the team, but we did an excellent job defensively for most of the 80 minutes. I felt we looked fairly comfortable

throughout, but we really stepped up a gear when we realized we were down to 12 men.

“Facing the Roosters with 13 players is challenging enough, but to do it with 12 for 10 minutes was a positive for us.”

The Storm couldn’t contest the decision because they had already used their review in the opening minutes of the

game, with captain Harry Grant regretting their failure to play to the whistle at a critical juncture.

“I thought they might review it, and that’s why we hesitated a bit,” he

explained. “We probably got caught up in that and didn’t play to the whistle, finding ourselves out of position.

Munster probably had to make that play, otherwise Tedesco could have gone the distance.

“He made the play, and we handled it pretty well in terms of moving on from it.”

The Storm weathered that phase and later pulled away in the game when Xavier Coates broke the stalemate with

yet another exceptional solo try, extending his impressive form at the start of the season.

“I believe he’s been among our top three or four players in every game this year,”

remarked Bellamy. “He’s made significant progress, and I’m genuinely proud of his achievements.

“He hasn’t relied on luck; he consistently puts in the hard work.”
