Sad News:Tears in Melbourne storm as Starm star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen season is over due to ….
|The Melbourne Storm provided a positive update for fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen following his ankle injury scare during Saturday night’s game. NRL enthusiasts were amazed as Papenhuyzen displayed a stellar performance, scoring a try in the first half against the Titans, seemingly aiming for an Origin debut under new coach Michael Maguire.
However, Papenhuyzen’s impressive display was marred by an unfortunate ankle injury. In the 38th minute, while
executing a kick-chase, he clutched his ankle in agony after appearing to get his studs stuck in the ground during a tackle, resulting in a twist to his right ankle.
The Storm’s momentum faltered after Papenhuyzen’s injury, allowing the
Titans to mount a comeback. However, Craig Bellamy’s squad managed to cling to a narrow 22-20 victory, marking
Cameron Munster’s 200th game for the club. Despite the win, Papenhuyzen reassured fans of his well-being through social media.
Unfortunately, Papenhuyzen revealed that he had sustained a fracture above
the plate inserted after his previous ankle injury. Initially anticipating a recovery period of six to eight weeks, the
Storm later confirmed that it was only a minor fracture, reducing his expected sideline time to approximately four to six weeks.
Nevertheless, fans expressed profound sadness for the fullback, especially considering he had only recently
returned to action after his prolonged absence. Since 2022, Papenhuyzen has appeared in just 11 games following a
knee cap injury that sidelined him for over a year. While he aims for a comeback later in 2024, the prospect of
his State of Origin debut now appears uncertain, with his return likely to occur before round 20.
The Storm managed to maintain their lead despite a late surge from the Titans, even as replacement fullback Sua
Fa’alogo also suffered a leg injury in just his second NRL appearance. Fa’alogo, who initially started on the wing before
filling in for Papenhuyzen, showcased his talent with a stunning try in the first half, making a memorable entry into the NRL.
However, the game took a somber turn in the final moments when the bunker intervened, ruling that the Titans had
stripped the ball from Nick Meaney. This decision effectively ended the contest and secured the victory for the Storm.
The call sparked controversy, with former player turned commentator Graham criticizing the bunker’s decision.
