The Detroit Lions are welcoming back a familiar face as safety C.J. Moore is set to rejoin the team on a one-year deal, according to reports on Tuesday. Moore recently completed a year-long suspension related to gambling.

In 2023, Moore was among several Lions players who faced suspensions for violating the NFL’s gambling policies,

alongside wide receiver Quintez Cephus, who received a season-long ban. Both have been reinstated, with Cephus now signed with the Buffalo Bills.

Moore initially joined the Lions as an undrafted free agent from Ole Miss in 2019, making significant contributions,

especially on special teams. His prowess in this area became his trademark, serving as a core player in coverage and return units.

Before his suspension last year, Moore had signed a one-year contract to

continue with the Lions for the 2023 season but was subsequently released following his suspension.

Currently, the Lions face depth challenges at safety, with Kerby Joseph sidelined until training camp due to hip

surgery, and Ifeatu Melifonwu expected to start for the first time after impressing late last season in place of Tracy Walker.

Before adding Moore to the roster, the Lions only had one other legitimate safety, Brandon Joseph, who joined as an undrafted free agent in 2023.

Coach Dan Campbell hinted at the possibility of transitioning Brian Branch from nickel cornerback to safety at times during the upcoming season.

Moore is expected to vie for a roster position during training camp, offering depth on both defense and special teams. With 48 career tackles and one interception over four NFL seasons, he brings experience and versatility to the team.
