Done deal: Philadelphia Phillies have landed Houston Astros Center fielder Jake Meyers…

The MLB trade deadline is at the end of July, but it’s always a good time to start considering moves for a playoff push. The Philadelphia Phillies are currently the best team in the league, but there’s still room for improvement.

.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, Houston Astros center fielder Jake Meyers might not be officially on the trade block, but he could attract interest.

“Given the Phillies’ struggle with consistent center field production,” Morosi stated on MLB Central, “Jake

Meyers would be a natural trade fit for a team like the Phillies, aiming to strengthen that position for the trade deadline and beyond.”

Jake Meyers was considered a potential trade candidate this past offseason, but the Astros decided to keep the 27-year-old. The former 13th-round pick from

2017 is having a strong season, hitting .263/.325/.429 with six home runs and 25 RBIs in 2024, and plays an above-average center field. If the Phillies were to trade

for Meyers, they wouldn’t just be acquiring a short-term asset; he is under team control through 2027 and is in the prime of his career.

The Phillies’ biggest weakness is their outfield. As the trade deadline approaches, they’ve been rumored to seek upgrades, and Jake Meyers could be

a cost-effective, under-the-radar option. While Meyers isn’t at the level of Luis Robert Jr. or Kyle Tucker, he can still

help strengthen the Phillies’ outfield for the second half of the season. Although he may not be a significant upgrade over

Johan Rojas, he would certainly provide manager Rob Thomson with more flexibility and options in the outfield.

As the season progresses, it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to stay healthy.

Brandon Marsh’s hamstring injury has already weakened the Phillies’ outfield.

Adding Jake Meyers would provide manager Rob Thomson with a reliable option to cover for any future injuries.

Acquiring Meyers likely wouldn’t cost the Phillies much if the Astros are willing to trade him. A few mid-level prospects could suffice, which wouldn’t significantly impact the Phillies’ strong farm system.

This potential move appears to be low-risk with a high-reward potential for

Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies in their pursuit of a World Series title.
