Foxboro — The New England Patriots appear to be taking the final steps toward filling the few remaining positions on new head coach Jerod
Mayo’s staff. According to a Tuesday afternoon CBS report, the Patriots plan to hire Taylor Embree, the former New
York Jets running backs coach, to the same position on Mayo’s staff. He will succeed Vinnie Sunsieri, who has
recently accepted the position of defensive backs coach at the University of Washington. Embree, 35, was named
running backs coach for the Jets in 2021, reporting to head coach Robert Saleh. The team announced in January that Embree would not be returning in 2024.
Former New York Jets running backs coach Taylor Embree is joining Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff with the New England Patriots. Having played receiver
at UCLA for four years, Embree entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2012 but was cut at the end of preseason.
Subsequently, Embree transitioned to coaching, starting as a graduate assistant at UNLV in 2012 before returning to UCLA in the same role until 2015.
Embree’s professional coaching career began in 2016 as a defensive assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs. He then moved to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as an
offensive quality control coach, where he worked alongside his father, Jon Embree, who is currently the tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins. After staying with
the 49ers until 2019, Embree returned to college football in 2020 as the tight ends coach at Colorado under head coach Karl Dorrell.
Following his time with the Buffaloes, Embree reunited with former colleague
Robert Saleh, now head coach of the Jets, for a coaching position in East Rutherford. The news of Embree’s
anticipated hiring with the Patriots coincides with a report from ESPN’s Mike Reiss, stating that most of Mayo’s coaching staff gathered for work
together on Tuesday. This meeting is seen as a significant step toward building team chemistry and formulating strategies for the 2024 season.
Since assuming the head coaching role for the Patriots on January 17, Mayo has
brought in offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterback coach T.C.
McCartney, offensive line coach Scott Peters, assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler, and assistant receivers coach.
