Phillies Sign Another Former Red Sox Player

Dave Dombrowski, who became the president of baseball operations for the Philadelphia Phillies in late 2020, has a history of bringing in former Boston Red Sox players. Maybe Dombrowski is attempting to exact revenge on his former team, which abruptly sacked him in 2019 little than a year after he won the World Series. Among the former Red Sox that Dombrowski has snatched from his previous team are Kyle Schwarber, Craig Kimbrel, Matt Strahm, and Kaleb Ort. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies have signed veteran reliever Austin Brice to a minor-league contract, so you can now add another guy to that list.

On Sunday, Brice, 31, was sighted at Spring Training. He’s only pitched for four big league teams, but he’s already with his ninth one. With the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, he made just four MLB appearances before retiring. The experienced righty did not play in a major-league game throughout his time

at Triple-A for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Minnesota Twins last

season. The first player to play in the majors who was born in Hong Kong is

Brice. Throughout his 144 MLB appearances, he has gone 4-4 with a 5.12

ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 5.06 FIP (143 as a relief). That includes two disappointing

seasons (2020 and 2021) with a 6.21 ERA with Boston. There is only one season for

Brice.with the Miami Marlins in 2019 and an ERA under four (3.43). He is hard

to trust in high-leverage situations because of his high home run (1.5 HR/9)

and walk (3.5 BB/9) rates. Additionally, he only strikes out 8.5 batters per nine.

While Dombrowski has had some success scrounging talent from his past club, Brice’s chances of succeeding seem slim.
