So Sad :Cheifs GM reveals the shocking draft he regrets missing out on

A common practice among some members of the media is to review past NFL drafts and speculate on which players teams would select knowing how they performed in their careers,

recognizing the clarity of hindsight. During an episode of Kevin Harvick’s “Happy Hour” podcast on Fox Sports,

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was posed with a question regarding whether there was a particular player he regrets not drafting.

Veach mentioned that the player he regrets not drafting is wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, who was chosen by Seattle as the final pick of the second round in the

2019 NFL Draft. Although the Chiefs did not have a first-round pick that year, they selected two players in the second

round: wide receiver Mecole Hardman (56th overall) and safety Juan Thornhill (63rd overall). Thornhill was picked just

before Metcalf, who has since become a two-time Pro Bowler and has amassed 900 or more receiving yards in all five NFL seasons.

“D.K. Metcalf might stand out because of his limited route tree,” Veach informed Harvick. “There were some injury

concerns as well. Sometimes, fans revisit mock drafts years later and say, ‘We should have drafted this player or that

player.’ However, at the time, a player might have been off our board due to character concerns or injury issues.

Reflecting on D.K., there were uncertainties, but none significant enough to justify passing on him.”

Certainly, Veach isn’t alone in overlooking Metcalf. Pro Football Focus’

2019 redo of the draft placed Metcalf at ninth overall, and Bleacher Report had him going to the Packers at 12th.

Moreover, the Chiefs’ success in reaching and winning the Super Bowl multiple times since that draft suggests Veach

doesn’t dwell on not picking Metcalf. He even sees draft misses as valuable learning experiences, helping him evolve into a better GM in the long term.
